01 / Relative

Performance against a benchmark

Rotation measures each sector and stock in percentage points ahead of or behind SPY, QQQ or its own sector ETF.

  • Today, 1W, 1M
  • Points ahead or behind
  • Price performance only
02 / Quadrants

1M against 1W tells the rotation

Ahead on both is Leading. Behind over 1M but ahead this week is Improving. The reverse is Fading. Behind on both is Lagging.

What Rotation answers

Open Rotation. Rotation compares sector ETFs, and the stocks inside them, with a benchmark. It asks:

  1. Which sectors are ahead of the market, and which are behind?
  2. Which are starting to turn?
  3. Which stocks are moving apart from their own sector?

Rotation is about price performance. It does not use options exposure.

Set up the page

Control Choices What it changes
Rank by Today, 1W, 1M The period used to rank sectors
Sectors vs SPY, QQQ The benchmark for sector ETFs
Stocks vs Sector ETF, Benchmark What each stock is measured against
View Map, Table, Compare, Tree How the results are shown

Relative performance is in points: a sector up 2.4% while SPY is up 0.3% is +2.1 pts ahead.

Read the Map

Each sector ETF sits at its 1M points versus the benchmark (across) and its 1W points (up and down):

Quadrant Meaning
Leading Ahead over 1M and ahead over 1W
Improving Behind over 1M, ahead over 1W
Fading Ahead over 1M, behind over 1W
Lagging Behind over 1M and behind over 1W

Select a sector to see its returns for Today, 1W and 1M, its points versus the benchmark, its rank, how many of its stocks beat the ETF, and its top gainers and losers. Show in table and Compare open the other views; the stock-workspace button opens the selected name.

Read the Table

One row per sector with its Return and vs benchmark points for Today, 1W and 1M, its Rotation state and Beat ETF, the number of its listed stocks beating the sector ETF. The column for the Rank by period is highlighted. A Compare button on each row charts that sector against the benchmark.

Use Compare

Compare charts the return since the window start, in percent, for 1M, 3M, YTD or 1Y. Click a stock on the left to overlay it on its sector. Missing daily closes stay gaps.

Use Tree

Tree shows the universe as tiles grouped by sector. It is the older market map, kept as a view inside Rotation.

Investigate next

Rule-based cards point to changes worth a look. Filter them by All, Sectors or Stocks:

Card What it flags
Turning up A sector that trailed the benchmark over 1M but is ahead this week
Leader fading A sector that led over 1M but trails this week
Narrow move A sector move carried by only a few of its stocks
Split from sector A stock moving far from its sector ETF today
Stock turning up A stock that trailed its sector over 1M and is now ahead this week

Each card has a sentence with the numbers, a small chart, and actions such as Show in sector. The cards are deterministic rules, not advice.

A quick review

  1. Rank by 1M and find the Leading and Lagging sectors on the Map.
  2. Switch to 1W to see which ones are turning.
  3. Check Beat ETF: a sector move carried by a few stocks is narrower than one carried by most.
  4. Read Investigate next for stocks splitting from their sector.
  5. Open a name in a price chart before drawing a conclusion.

Relative strength describes what already happened. It does not predict what comes next.
